The American Alec Soth (born 1969) counts among the most influential photographers of his generation. His copious series of photo-graphs of the American Middle West, taken mostly with a large-format camera, have in recent years essentially helped to shape the way Americans see themselves.

Having grown up in Minnesota, Alec Soth graduated from the famous Sarah Lawrence College, Yonkers, New York. Soth came to photography via Land Art and painting. For him it was the ideal medium for a man always on the move. The documentary style of the richly detailed large format frequently merges in Soth’s work with a romantic pictorialist saturation of colour: the fundamental American myth of colonization and settlement and the promise of salvation through nature are always somewhere in the background.

Soth’s exemplifying impact is ascribable not just to his style and manner of photographic research and his membership of the famous Magnum Photo Agency. His blog Little Brown Mushroom and the publishing house of the same name are considered exemplary for an extended understanding of the medium as a possible means of “communicative action” in the age of the inter-net. They also serve him as a kind of counterweight to his interest in eremitic ways of life and to the lonely act of taking photographs, which he frequently refers to as “beautiful loneliness in voyeurism”. His exhibition piece, Little Brown Mushroom Suitcase Show, specially installed at the Sprengel Museum on the occasion of the LUMIX Festival, is a lounge with large-format photographs on the walls offering inspiring ideas for visitors to take home with them and do with as they like. There’s ping-pong too.

Opening: 20th June 2014, 3.00 p.m.
The welcoming speeches will be given by Dr. Carina Plath, Deputy Director Sprengel Museum Hannover and Dr. Sabine Schormann, Director of the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. Inka Schube, curator, will introduce the project.

Alec Soth will then speak about his work and sign the photo publication specially produced for the exhibition: ALEC SOTH, ST. PAUL, 2014, comprising 64 separate prints each measuring 24.1 x 33.7 cm for an overall size of 193 x 269.3 cm, plus index, Duotone offset-printed, wrapped in film, limited edition of 500, price: 20 euros.
