The Kurt and Ernst Schwitters Foundation was founded in 2001 in Hanover as a legally-recognised, non-profit making foundation according to German law. Its purpose is, according to its founding principles certificate, “to maintain, restore and document the work of the visual artist, writer, typographer and commercial artist, Kurt Schwitters and that of his son, Ernst Schwitters (photographer and collector) as a body of work completely for the purposes of both exhibitions and for research.“
The foundation owns the entire estates of both artists and also has the right of usage of said images. This includes:

The foundation owns the entire estates of both artists and also has the right of usage of said images. This includes:
- More than 1000 works by Kurt Schwitters in all of the media he worked in and from all periods of his career
- Ernst Schwitters’ photographic archive containing more than 100,000 photographic works realised between 1927–1993
- Ernst Schwitters’ collection of Modern art (consisting of approx. 120 works by the likes of Klee, Miró and Moholy-Nagy)
- The written estates of both artists (correspondence, manuscripts and autographs).
