Max Ernst was one of those exceptional artists who never limited himself to a specific style and is, therefore, impossible to categorise. His work is a testament to his never-ending desire to experiment, constantly developing new and innovative artistic techniques, such as Décalcomanie (a reproductive procedure). He was a founder of the Dadaist group in Cologne and later helped to pave the way for Surrealism in Paris. After being forced to emigrate to the USA during WW II, his work changed again, focussing on his fascination for the Arizona landscape. The Sprengel Museum Hannover has an important selection of this artist’s paintings and sculptures in its permanent collection, offering visitors a remarkable overview of Max Ernst’s entire career.
