“Die Eltern des Künstlers II“ ("The Artist’s Parents II") from 1924, is a painting in the Sprengel Museum Hannover’s collection that represents Dix’s work as a painter and draughtsman exceptionally well. As one of the artists working in a style known as “Neue Sachlichkeit” ("New Objectivity"), he spent much of his time in Düsseldorf (from 1923 – 1925) concentrating on portraiture. This picture of the artist’s parents sitting on a damaged sofa is a good example of the distanced way he portrayed those close to him. He is pitiless in his portrayal of his parents, who look old and worn-out; he presents them as everyday folk, members of a lower class than most subjects of painted portraits.
