In 1969, Margrit and Bernhard Sprengel donated their considerable and very significant collection of 20th century art to the city of Hanover. Ten years later, the Sprengels kindly contributed sufficient funds for the laying down of the foundation stones for a new museum, which now bears their name and has become one of the most important European centres for Modern and contemporary art.
What one donor and his wife started now continues with more than 400 members in the “Friends of the Sprengel Museum Hannover”. Since its foundation in 1980, and beyond its fund-raising activities, this group has managed to establish a lobby that represents the museum in a number of contexts. They have made the museum into a meeting place where the exchange of ideas is facilitated. This translates into the fact that the “Friends” do not perceive the Sprengel Museum Hannover as an institution for mere contemplation but, on the contrary, as a place where lively interaction with and about art is possible. For this reason, the organisation regularly organises discussions, studio talks, lectures and art-related trips all over the world. Of course, the opportunity to view shows before they are formally opened and special guided tours of all of the important exhibitions at the museum are also an important part of the “Friends” programme.
